It’s Turtle Time!

During the nights of April through September, on the Eastern shore of Cozumel, two species of turtle come ashore to lay their eggs on the beach. The turtles, known as the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) and the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), generally lay from 100-150 eggs and can nest up to 6 times in one season. Be sure to check out our awesome turtle video in our gallery!

  1. Although sea turtles move swiftly in the ocean, they are slow and defenseless on land. Male sea turtles almost never leave the water. Female sea turtles leave the ocean only to lay eggs and, for most species, nest only at night. A female may nest every two to three years.
